The regional differences of four major rice cultivars (Dongjin, Chuchong, Ilpum, and Odae) in Korea were investigated using capillary electrophoresis (CE). While distinct regional difference was not observed in Dongjin, peak e, peak f, and the sum of peak area a-d were slightly different in their cultivated sites. Chungcheongbukdo Chuchong showed distinctive differences in peak d and f from others. Peak c, peak d, peak f, and the ratio of peak c to peak d could be useful indexes for discrimination of cultivated site for Ilpum. In Odae cultivar, peak d, peak e, peak f, peak g and the ratio of peak d to peak a and peak f to peak g also showed the regional differences of this cultivar. The results of the study showed that CE was effective in discriminating cultivated region of cultivars Dongjin, Chuchong, Ilpum, and Odae by the accumulation of data on the ratio of specific peak area to total peak area and that of specific peak area to other peak area. While further validation of results requires multi-year data, this preliminary finding presented that CE could be a potential method for discrimination of cultivated site of rice.
